Dice are among humanity’s oldest gaming and divination tools, with origins tracing back over 5,000 years. Archaeologists have uncovered dice made of bone, ivory, and stone in ancient Persia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and China. While today we mostly associate them with board games or gambling, ancient peoples often used them to seek messages from the Gods, determine fates, or make sacred decisions. In some cultures, the "casting of lots" (which included dice or marked sticks) was a ritual act, believed to reveal divine will.

Today, dice have found a home in the hands of psychics, mystics, shamans, and healers who seek clarity beyond the veil. A throw of the dice offers a more extensive oracle reading than a pendulum which is limited in the visual communication it offers. A practitioner of dice readings can receive quick yes/no answers, explore relationship dynamics, or understand life patterns.

Healers or Shamans often ask for guidance on where energy blockages may affect a person. The dice can reveal accurate information so a healer may work with the blocked frequencies.

Set & Setting is where it's at for divination

Prepare your space as if you are stepping into a sacred temple. Light candles, place crystals or other stones, statues, or amulets around your work surface. A glass of water or a bowl of water is essential to begin the ritual. It is a living entity and is always ready to receive messages. I use a printed water photo mousepad in the center of my altar because it looks like a watery pool.

What do the dice numbers mean?

Quick Dice Divination with 6-sided dice

There are many approaches to dice divination and exploration: Some approaches involve different numbers of dice, some involve dice with different numbers of sides, some involve different colors of dice and dice with different symbols painted on the sides.

Some Dice Divination requires repeated rolls in order to get a message. Others involve rolling dice within a small circle. Some forms of dice exploration use addition to tally the numbers, while others keep the numbers separate and interpret them individually.

While there are many different rules and approaches to using dice in mysticism, all forms are basically the same: The reader rolls the dice, and interprets the results based on their expertise in working with the messages of Spirit.

The most common method of divination with dice is to use 3 Six-Sided dice.

Roll the dice, add the numbers and reduce it to a single digit, numerology-style. Then interpret the result.

A popular method of divination involves the use of a small throwing circle. The size of the circle is typically around 8-9 inches, and can be marked on the ground with chalk or with a piece of string or you can use a round surface on your altar. Crystal Grids and even Mousepads work really well to create a throwing surface.

If any dice roll outside the circle, they are ignored, and only the dice within the circle are counted. This increases the possibility of lower numbers and reduces the possibility of higher numbers. Some readers object to the use of a circle because it adds an element of physical skill and coordination to the reading, rather than relying on pure fate. They like a free-throwing technique and let the die fall where they will. Others prefer using a defined circle, as it adds an additional element of chance to their readings and a greater number of possible outcomes.

The Divine Meaning of Dice Totals

Your chosen dice will become your tool(s) for most of your mystical work. Choose the ones you adore. You will be handling them a lot. Integrate your energy into the dice by handling them, rolling them, breathing on them, and loving them. Your readings will reflect your devotion to your psychic tools. The most accurate and informational readings will come from doing a "full throw" using multiple dice, but you can also throw just one die and get a very good reading from that. It will be limited in scope, but still okay. Here is a list of all the dice divination meanings from 1 to 20 using either the three 6-Sided Dice, the 20-Sided Dice, or 2 10-Sided Dice. You want a combination of dice that can total 18-20 numbers.

Now, roll the dice, total the numbers and reduce to 1 or 2 digits. You will interpret the meanings as they are relevant to your life or your situation.

Dice total: 1 - A dice roll of 1 indicates family strife or some kind of tension. Romantic conflict or trouble at home may be indicated. A dice roll of 1 may also indicate an upcoming period of solitude or isolation. In other cases, a die roll of 1 may actually indicate the necessity or importance of alone-time. It might also mean self-sufficiency and personal power.

Dice total: 2 - A dice roll of 2 often indicates a double meaning. Caution is indicated. Visible appearances may be deceiving. Something is not as it appears, and may be hiding within plain sight. In other cases, a die roll of 2 simply asks us to look closely at our lives and the decisions we have made and consider the best of obvious choices.

Dice total: 3 - A dice roll of 3 is a fortunate roll. It indicates a time of plenty and a period of good luck. A dice roll of 3 may ask us to recall a time when similar circumstances occurred and how that may have some importance to the present. A dice roll of 3 may indicate an upcoming change in circumstances and a stroke of good fortune or an opportunity for greater communication and connection. NOTE: A roll of three 1’s is seen as a particularly lucky indicator. A roll of 2 and 1, with 1 die disqualified outside the circle is also seen as lucky, but not as lucky as three 1’s.

Dice total: 4 - A dice roll of 4 indicates some kind of temporary setback. It generally indicates a turn of events that will impede progress towards your goals, or temporarily derail a current project. This setback is likely to come as a surprise and may test your personal strength or someone else’s.

Dice total: 5 - A dice roll of 5 indicates something new entering your life. It could be new information, or a new situation or helpful person. A dice roll of 5 is very positive, and typically represents some external source of positivity. It may also indicate news from far away. In some cases it may also represent the connection of a long-lost friend.

Dice total: 6 - A dice roll of 6 is typically unlucky, because it represents misfortune to someone else. It may represent a loss experienced by a close friend or a family member, or it may represent a business closure, a catastrophic loss, or a failed investment. The number 6 may also indicate a friend is coming to you for help.

Dice total: 7 - A dice roll of 7 is a maelstrom of trouble. Gossip, scandals and legal entanglements can throw your life off course — or the life of someone close to you. It may also represent a problem of some kind involving social media, or a public relations problem for a business. In some cases it may also represent a romantic relationship which is wild and out of control. It can also indicate a personal intellectual or spiritual transformation that changes all negativity.

Dice total: 8 - A dice roll of 8 is an indicator of stability and slowness. When an 8 is rolled it tells us to take things easy and not make any quick or reckless decisions. If a decision lies before you and you feel pressured to make it, remember that doing nothing is an option too. Now may be a time to wait and see how events around you change. The 8 roll also portends opportunities for abundance or financial gain.

Dice total: 9 - A dice roll of 9 indicates closure, endings, or heightened passion, romance and love. Depending on your personal circumstances this number may have different meanings. Generally speaking it means that love is in the air. If you are single, it may mean a new relationship or a new crush developing. If you are married, it may indicate a rekindling of love and a time of new closeness. In some cases, the number 9 may indicate new business or a period of increased luck. It also indicates a higher calling of service to humanity.

Dice total: 10 - A dice roll of 10 indicates a surge in creative energy and a birth of new ideas and new opportunities. It means an increase in self-confidence and self-sufficiency. In business, a time of success and positive growth is indicated because of the efforts of positive decision-making and productivity. In personal matters it may indicate a happy time and a positive outlook. In some cases it may also indicate a new life is coming in the form of pregnancy or a birth.

Dice total: 11 - A dice roll of 11 indicates a setback in a relationship or a downturn in someone’s health. Something that was normal and healthy, suddenly falls into a state of chaos or enters an unhealthy cycle. This can be a trying time, but will be temporary. Focus on your strengths. Take care of yourself and those around you. This, too, will pass in good time. In relationships, business, or finance, the number 11 indicates a loss and possibly someone cheating you or betraying your trust.

Dice total: 12 - A dice roll of 12 represents good news from an official source or an institution of some kind. Often it is good financial news or a positive legal settlement. It may also represent good news from an employer or an academic institution. If you have been involved in any kind of a dispute or are dealing with financial issues, it may represent signs of hope and easier times ahead.

Dice total: 13 - A dice roll of 13 represents internal hardship. Hard work becomes untenable due to circumstances beyond your control. Depression or stress may alter your ability to cope. It could indicate a time when your thoughts and feelings seem to exist in a dark cloud of negativity and distress. It is wise to remember that within us we have an eternal spark of optimism and positivity, a light that never goes out. Focus on that light and all will return to ease and comfort. “It is always darkest before the dawn”.

A roll of 14 often indicates that assistance and opportunity comes from social contacts or from someone in your extended family. Do not avoid socializing and don't skip a reunion or a social event. Something very positive will happen at those types of events. Maybe, it may mean a new romantic connection at a recreational gathering or business convention of some kind.

Dice total: 15 - The number 15 can be either positive or negative. It typically indicates a time of rapid changes in which family dynamics become strained, friendships shift, or connections become uncertain. In this time of chaos, new opportunities arise. New friendships form and new alliances are made. Be mindful of risks at this time, and remember to maintain trust and faith at this time, which may challenge you more than you expect.

Dice total: 16 - A dice roll of 16 means travel is indicated. It may be any distance, long or short, days or hours. In any case, the trip will be a positive one and is worth taking. A roll of 16 may also indicate a gift or the arrival of good news from someone else who has been traveling. The higher power of this number is that you will benefit by your personal strength and ambition; and will receive great comfort and support from your home and family

It’s important to observe what is happening with an open mind and in-tune with the thoughts and emotions of others. Remain empathetic and conscious of others because a dice roll of 17 is usually positive in the end; but for those who ignore the feelings and wishes of those around them, a dice roll of 17 may indicate a very negative outcome. This is a very positive indication that your path is aligned with higher power.

Dice total: 20 - A dice roll of 20 indicates recognition for cooperative efforts and hard work. It is a time when self-esteem is reinforced by rewards that will come. Many will admire your tenacity and good choices. You will attract new friends, lovers, partners, or find positive situations in which to share your wealth of talent and creativity as long as you remain easygoing and mature in your elevated status.
